Lecture on ‘Understanding Human Security in India’s Context’

April 12, 2022

The concept of human security emphasizes the strong link between human well-being and the achievement of peace and security. Challenging the traditional notion of security as the protection of citizens from external aggression, the concept of human security takes a much broader view of human well-being where the achievement of peace and security includes freedom from disease, hunger, poverty, environmental degradation, climate change and the violation of human rights. The lecture will discuss the seven dimensions on which human security depend: personal and physical safety, community security, political security, economic security, food security, health and the environment. Particular focus during the lecture will be on the link between food security and peace.
